Opportunities in Life
As we go through our careers in our wonderful profession of orthodontics, we should think of the effect that our lives may have on the future generations of orthodontists.
The great American poet of the 18th century, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, tells us that we have an opportunity to influence future generations, when he wrote:
Lives of great men all remind us, We can make our lives sublime And in passing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Footprints that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother Seeing, will take heart again.
Children tend to do what parents wish them to do, whether it is by the spoken word or by precept and example. It may be noted that many orthodontists' parents and grandparents were orthodontists.
By the same token we should be careful how we practice the art and science of orthodontics; knowing that those who follow us, may try to imitate our methods and our philosophies of treatment. If we ever build a better profession or a better world, it will be one generation at a time. Let each generation try to contribute its fair share of real progress!!
