The Schudy Chronicles

How Long Can We Ignore the Basics?

Every discipline has certain basic concepts which undergird the very foundation of the discipline. These basic concepts cannot be ignored without distorting the foundations of the discipline – in this case the discipline is Orthodontics.

The real foundation of Orthodontics was discovered in 1960. There has been constant and continuous effort to convince our profession of this truth. When we embark on an honest quest for truth, it becomes obvious that just two basic growth increments control the unfolding of the lower face and jaws. We must start here when we begin to study the growth of the jaws.

The foundations of Orthodontics can be ignored only so long (even longer than one professional life span) and then "the chickens come home to roost." May the final judge of the universe forgive our blunderings.

The great American Philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his publication "Self Reliance," stated that "To be great is to be misunderstood." All great men, such as Socrates, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Martin Luther and Jesus, have been misunderstood.
