The Progress of a Profession
As a profession is expanding and progressing, growing pains can be expected. But when bed rock truths are discovered and not recognized, but ignored, forcing the profession to cling to old invalid tenets, the progress is dangerously interrupted.
When a situation like this is allowed to exist for forty years, then forty years of progress has been lost, and the literature has been so watered down that it represents pure chaos. Many examples have been pointed out where incorrect concepts have been published, but this has been completely ignored in the literature.
However, there is hope. The proficient orthodontists understand these important principles and continue to improve the service they deliver to the public. The study clubs in our country are doing a marvelous job of upgrading treatment. So we are making progress in spite of the imbalance between the concepts in our literature and the progress of the end product to the public. It is hoped that this unhealthy condition will soon be corrected.
