Dr. Fred F. Schudy died peacefully at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital on Friday, March 2, 2001 with his family in attendance following a hip fracture. His life of 93 years included a rich family life, a distinguished orthodontic career, and years of service to his church and community. Florence Mae Summers Schudy, his wife of 53 years, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son Dr. George Frederick Schudy, daughter-in-law Judy; his daughter Ann Schudy Hendrickson, son-in-law Bruce I. Hendrickson; grandchildren Elise, Richard, and Robert Schudy, Jill (Edwards), Amy (Donley), and Sue Hendrickson; and great grandchildren Audrey and Cole Edwards. His sisters Rebecca Schudy Steelman and Pearl Schudy Allen of Springfield, Missouri along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive Dr. Schudy. Dr. Schudy was born February 14, 1908, in Coldsprings, Missouri. He attended college at Southwest Missouri University in Springfield, Missouri, Dental School at Washington University School of Dentistry, St. Louis, Missouri, and Orthodontic School at Columbia University, New York. Dr. Schudy practiced General Dentistry in Ava, Missouri for eight years prior to receiving his orthodontic training. He and his wife moved to Houston, Texas in 1942 before going into the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, the Schudy’s returned to Houston, and Dr. Schudy opened a private orthodontic practice that he continued until retirement in 1987. Dr. Schudy was a loyal and sustaining member of many organizations. He had been a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church since 1947, was a member of the Executive Board of the Church for over 30 years, received the Distinguished Life Award, and taught Sunday School there as well as at three previous churches. In Ava, Dr. Schudy was President of The Lions’ Club and a member of the City Council. In Springfield, Missouri he was President of the Springfield District Dental Society. In Houston, Dr. Schudy was a sponsoring member of Big Brothers of America and a member of The River Oaks Rotary Club. He was a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, the Texas Dental Association, the Houston District Dental Society, the Tweed Study Club of Texas and the Edward H. Angle Orthodontic Society. Dr. Schudy was also a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Fraternity, the Delta sigma delta Dental Fraternity. Dr. Schudy was also a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry, and a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics. During his orthodontic career, Dr. Schudy received the Rowland Award and the Martin H. Dewey Award for proficiency and achievement in orthodontics. Dr. Schudy also received the Merit Award for achievement in orthodontics from St. Louis University Alumni Association, the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Columbia University, and The Outstanding Alumnus Award from Washington University. Finally, Dr. Schudy received the coveted Albert H. Ketchum Award for outstanding contributions to the profession over a lifetime. Dr. Schudy published eight original articles on Growth and Development of the Dento-facial Complex as it pertained to the treatment of Malocclusion. He lectured widely in the U.S.A., Mexico, Canada, and Europe. He conducted courses at most Dental Schools in the Untied States and before most of the professional organizations in Orthodontics in the United States. His family, neighbors, and friends will most remember him for his courage in aging. Family visitation will be at the George H. Lewis Funeral Home, 1010 Bering from 3-5 PM on Sunday, March 4, 2001. On Monday, March 5, 2001 there will be a private family interment followed by a 2:00 PM Memorial Service at St. Luke’s Methodist Church and a family reception in the Hines Baker Room.
